Inclusionist Interactions: Accidental Sexism’s

Come and join other Men for Inclusion 'Inclusionists' for our fortnightly virtual chat and discussion. We are welcoming members and non-members to join.

This week we will be discussing Accidental Sexism’s and their costs to firms.

Let’s ask ourselves how much is inequality costing your business?

•             If quiet voices can’t be heard

•             If due to your gender you are given less high profile responsibilities and expected to pick up the office housework

•             If as a women you more harshly judged and your potential not realized

•             If you are given less actionable and clear feedback than your male colleagues

•             If you not given equal airtime and your ideas are not taken seriously or credited to someone else.

•             You not included in formal and informal social networks

•             If incorrect assumptions are being made about your capabilities, ambitions and needs

•             If you have to work harder to gain the support and attention of senior mangers and leaders, who less forgiving when things go wrong

•             And when you do succeed and get promotion many think you only got the job because you are a women.

Research shows that these are the lived experiences of lots of women and others from underrepresented groups. As a women you will recognize most of them. Men, if they do recognize them, tend to under estimate the impact they are having.   They are blind to their relative advantage.

If approximately half of your colleagues are experiencing these things on an almost daily basis how much is that costing.

If not  now then when are we men – who own the culture, whose behaviours and values contribute to these costs going to step forward and step up. When are you going to become active?
