Why Educating Boys Is Essential to Ending Violence Against Women and Redefining Modern Masculinity

Looking ahead to next Thursday’s announcement on tackling violence against women, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood will unveil the long-awaited plan to address what ministers are calling a “national emergency.”

This strategy focuses on educating boys in schools as part of broader efforts to combat violence against women.

The emphasis on boys’ education is not only welcome but essential. Much of the harmful behavior we witness stems from outdated notions of what it means to “be a man.” When boys grow up constrained by narrow stereotypes, told to hide emotions, avoid vulnerability or fit into rigid roles – it harms not only others but also limits their own wellbeing, relationships and future.

I am hopeful that this strategy will promote the positives of being a modern man: empathetic, respectful, emotionally aware and confident enough to define manhood on their own terms.

When boys are supported to break free from old stereotypes, they grow into men who lead happier, fuller lives filled with opportunity, choice and healthy relationships. Critically, they also contribute to a safer, fairer society for everyone.

I will be watching next Thursday’s announcement closely and look forward to seeing a plan that places education, respect and positive masculinity at the center.
