He Says It’s Diversity Targets – But It’s Really About Privilege: Why We Still Have Work to Do

So they didn’t get the job… but she did.

And now one of them is saying he only missed out because of “diversity targets.”

I had this conversation twice yesterday.

Here’s the thing 👇

What he should remember:

  • She wouldn’t want the job if she thought she only got it because of a diversity box tick.
  • She’s probably had to work harder, prove herself more, and face more obstacles than you ever did just to even be in the running.
  • And the data? It still says you’re more likely to be promoted than she is. So no, this isn’t “reverse discrimination.”

What she should remember:

  • The last time he went for a promotion and didn’t get it, the man who did get it was (apparently) an Ar… L…… D….  (you can fill in the blanks 😅)

So maybe this one isn’t about gender sometimes it’s just about people.

And what I remind myself:

  • Every opportunity, every success I’ve had in my career has come with a relative advantage simply because I’m a man.

Until that’s no longer true, we’ve still got work to do.
