Driving Allyship in Construction: Reflections from Bristan Group’s First Men as Allies Event

Yesterday, I had the privilege of joining Bristan Group Ltd for their first Men as Allies event, a brilliant initiative hosted by Adam May and supported by Anthea Marris and the Construction Inclusion Coalition. It was an inspiring day, and I left feeling genuinely energised by the commitment and openness shown by everyone in the room.

The goal of the session was simple but powerful: to deepen understanding, spark meaningful conversations, and equip colleagues with the tools and confidence to become stronger allies. And the level of engagement was exceptional.

Throughout the day, we explored:

  • What allyship really looks like in everyday behaviour

  • How “accidental sexism” still holds people back

  • Why inclusion requires intentional leadership — especially in environments where men often hold the majority of influence

  • The small, practical steps each of us can take to challenge old norms and create more equitable workplaces

What struck me most was the willingness of Bristan colleagues to lean into difficult topics, reflect honestly, and support each other in thinking differently. That kind of openness is what drives genuine cultural change.

I also want to recognise Adam’s determination to make this not a one-off event, but the first of many. That commitment is what creates momentum. I see that same momentum building across the construction sector, a shift towards curiosity, accountability, and a real desire to do better.

Inclusion isn’t something a policy can fix. It’s something people practice. And when individuals take responsibility for their behaviours, that’s when organisations transform.

A huge thank you to everyone who participated so wholeheartedly. Sessions like this remind me just how much progress is possible when people come together with purpose and humility.

If you’re passionate about allyship, inclusion, and driving meaningful change in your organisation, I’d love to continue the conversation. Men for Inclusion is here to support organisations that want to accelerate their journey and it always starts with a conversation.

Feel free to get in touch if you’d like to bring a similar session to your team.
