Inclusion: A Daily Practice, Not Just a Headline

At Men for Inclusion, we know that genuine inclusion isn’t defined by a workshop or a campaign week — it lives in the everyday actions we choose to take. That belief was brought to life during a recent session with the National Energy System Operator (NESO) and the Women in NESO network, led by the brilliant Dr. Roya Ahmadi. This wasn’t a conversation about criticising men or placing blame. Instead, it focused on something far more powerful: how men can meaningfully support women, and how all of us can show up for underrepresented groups at work.

A key theme throughout the day was privilege, how we recognise it, how we use it, and how we can avoid letting it unintentionally reinforce barriers. These aren’t always comfortable conversations, but NESO demonstrated the kind of culture where leaders willingly lean in, challenge existing norms, and embrace the accountability required to move the dial. It’s a privilege to work alongside organisations where these discussions are not only happening but actively encouraged.

One message that resonated strongly, and one that Roya articulated perfectly, is that awareness alone doesn’t deliver progress. Good intentions don’t create inclusion. Action does. And not just big initiatives or standout projects, the real transformation happens in the small, habitual choices we make every day. Who we listen to, who we invite into the room, who we advocate for, and who we give room to grow all determine whether someone feels included and valued.

Consistency matters far more than grand gestures. When people feel supported day after day, not just occasionally, workplaces become environments where everyone can thrive, not just the few who have always had access to opportunity.

I am deeply grateful to Roya and the Women in NESO network for hosting such a thoughtful session, and to every participant who showed up with honesty, openness and a willingness to reflect. The momentum within NESO is inspiring, and we look forward to continuing this journey together.

If your organisation is ready to shift inclusion from something you talk about… to something you do, we’d love to support you in making that happen. Let’s keep building cultures where inclusion is not a headline but a habit lived daily by all of us.
