The “Nice” Bias That Still Holds People Back
Not all bias is loud or hostile.
Sometimes it’s polite. Friendly. Even well-intentioned.
It’s the manager who spares someone from challenging work “to protect them from stress.”
The colleague who steps in to “handle” a situation they assume will be too much.
The feedback that praises personality, but never comments on leadership or technical skill.
👉 This is benevolent bias — and while it looks kind, it quietly:
Limits career progression
Undermines confidence
Reinforces outdated stereotypes
👉 The fix?
Notice it.
Question assumptions.
Give equal challenges and feedback.
Recognise achievement over stereotypes.
Because real respect isn’t about shielding people from opportunities — it’s giving everyone the same shot at them.
Have you ever seen this “nice” bias at work?
