Some men are part of the problem, most men could be part of the solution!
As a delegate at CSW69, I received this image from UN Women UK, prompting deep reflection.
I must begin by acknowledging that I lack in-depth knowledge of gender equality in many regions of the world—my understanding stems from personal experience and the shared privilege of those who can access this post – here in the UK and in other parts of the world. I also recognize that many women in Western societies continue to endure extreme behaviors from some men and in many workplaces a poorer lived experiance than thier male counterparts.
But the big question is why is ‘the poison of patriarchy back’?
In 2014, Emma Watson addressed the United Nations, launching the hashtag HeForShe campaign. Her speech included several pivotal messages including:
“How can we affect change in the world when only half of it is invited or feel welcome to participate in the conversation?”
“Men don’t have the benefits of equality either.”
These statements underscore the necessity of inclusive dialogue and highlight that gender equality benefits everyone. I remind myself of them almost daily.
My question to António Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General, is this:
Have we truly listened to and acted upon these words? When we call for action today, how are we responding to Emma’s speech from 11 years ago?
If we haven’t or aren’t planning to, could this inaction be contributing to the resurgence of patriarchal attitudes?
There are men here ready and willing to take action for gender equality ( Equal and Inclusive Societies, Workplaces and Homes – where we can all safely flourish – and reap the benefit of choice and opportunity). Please engage us?
