Inclusion: The Key to Unlocking a Diverse Energy Sector — But Change Must Accelerate

Progress towards a more inclusive energy sector is happening – but we must do more about the glacial pace.

That was one of the key takeaways I took from this year’s Equity, Diversity & Inclusion in Energy Conference, hosted by Energy UK, Energy Institute, Energy Networks Association and Ofgem.

I remember going into last year’s conference with the usual cocktail of anticipation, energy and optimism that our messaging around the benefits of inclusivity would resound with a new audience.

So it gives me cause to reflect that while it’s been fantastic to return this year and connect with so many new friends, partners and customers, there’s still more we can do. Tangible progress is slow, and opportunities to discuss the challenges against an EDI-positive culture need to continue – bringing along as many as we can for the ride.

I noticed one big difference in the room today – the high proportion of men who joined for the conversation. Even just a couple of years ago, this wouldn’t have been the case. Many had even gone so far as to free themselves of dated stereotypes by forgoing or removing their suit jackets and ties.

Above all, the message we so eagerly brought with us a year ago has truly hit home this year: that inclusion is the great unlock – bringing people together, unlocking the business case and quietening the resistance. Perhaps by next year, we’ll see another shift again – just a little quicker, I hope.

Thanks to the organisers for having us and hosting such an important event.
